Patient: Rosina

Diagnosis: Hemorrahagic Stroke
Sort Newest First

Introduction
Our beautiful Mom, Rosina had a Hemorrhagic Stroke on Saturday July 12, 2008. She was admiitied to Irvine Regional Hospital. She is not on any life support and continues to be breathing on her own. She has no use on her right side but is using her left hand to hold her loved ones. She opens her eyes and it is very apparent she knows we are there. She tries to get something out especially when her grandkids have kissed her. Her family is remaining very hopeful and all prayers and positve thoughts are welcomed and encouraged. She is a very strong-willed woman and a child of God. We do not know many others who have so many angels hard at work.

Since Sunday Rosina has been sleeping heavily. She opens her eyes and scratches her head every now and then. The doctor's say these next few days she will be recovering. The chances that she bleeds again are very low, but she remains in ICU in case anything happens they are prepared to help her. Sunday seemed to be the day of HOPE and a refreshing outlook on what is possible. Everyone's thoughts and prayers are sincerly appreciated and we would only ask for you to continue praying.

Rosina had a good day. Getting nutrition. Long Road ahead, but still improving. All prayers and well wishes are appreciated. Still in ICU just as a precaution. She had physical therapy today and did great. Lifted her arm when asked and moved her foot.

Today was a good day for Rosina. She had 3 doctors visit her in a row one being physical therapy. All 3 doctors said she looked good. She was able to swallow lemon ice and pudding. She will start a puree diet soon. She is more and more alert and aware trying to get something out. Her sighs or grunts are now broken trying to make a word. She waved hello to her new nurse. She will be out of ICU by the weekend and on a new floor. Her Rehabilitiation is what we are focussing on for this long road ahead. We are on a wing of a prayer and miracle!

She looked at me and caressed my hair then looked at my cross, made big eyes and grabbed it and examined it. Her brothers, sisters, nephews and dear friends fill the watiing room. She is definitely loved by many. YOUR PRAYERS MAKE THE DIFFERENCE!

Getting something out vocally, can't understand them but more than just grunts or sighs. We are looking for a good nursing facility where she will be able to concentrate on physical, speech therapy. Well Wishes and Positive Thoughts. THank you Thank You Thank you. Your support keeps us looking Up!

Mom swallowed banana pudding and ice chips during speech therapy. Both therapists seem very genuine and caring. He asked her yes and no questions and she pointed to the yes or no on the paper. She laughed a few times and made progress. Then a couple hours later, a pureed meal showed up in her room, with help and some on her own she ejoyed chicken, carrots and chocolate ice cream for dessert! She dropped some on her finger monitor and started licking it off and started laughing! We're not sure how or if she was supposed to get that meal that soon, but hey. God works in mysterious ways! Saturday is going to be a busy day with her sisters and brothers coming into town. We ask to keep posted via this website. There will be a need for visitors once she set up at her new facility. Thank you for your understanding and prayers.

She looked good this morning, she will have a pureed lunch and hopefully get that feeding tube out of her nose. Grandkids went in today and sung her "you are my sunshine" she enjoyed that. Many visitors going through there. Only concerned because germs and risk of neumonia. Once she is at rehab facility, we can welcome one and all. Thanks.

Mom sat in chair for 2 hours and ate breakfast. Very exhausting for her. Had to wake her up for physical therapy and lunch. Ate most of lunch on her own. No decisions to change floors today. Famly members see a difference in her facial expressions and outlook. Mom gave me her eyebrows when I asked her to slow down drinking her milk. Going back later today. We will all want to hear her sweet voice soon!

Well, now the doctors say she may be moved out of ICU Wednesday possibly. They have to monitor levels of medication before getting her out of there. Got her feeding tube out though! That must feel good. We appreciate everyone's geniune concern and just ask to wait, pray and respect her getting her rest. When I saw her tonight she was tired and not in the best of moods, but expected to have highs and lows. Love to all.

She has moments of confusion. Too much interaction can slow progress. Her brothers and sisters and daughters have been with her. She is enjoying eating her pureed food using her left hand to feed herself better than I could!

Wow, what a day! It is so good to see Mom laugh! Her beautiful smile! She seemed to look at me with concern on her face so I told her not to worry about me cuz I am taking care of myself, then I sang " I am Woman, hear me Roar!" and she got a good laugh! She tried writing some letters today! First it looked like jibberish, then each try got better....after 3 attempts she wrote her name! Albeit, not perfect but we could clearly see "Rosina"!!! When i went in to say goodnight she smacked her lips together, then said water! I wet her mouth with a swab and it seemed to refresh her. She was really trying to tell Stefanie and I something....she was getting frustrated, we told her to rest, tomorrow is another day, and it's all in God's time!

Doctors continue to give rave reviews for mom's recovery! She now can go straight to acute therapy instead of going first to a skilled nursing facility! That is great news. We are finding out and deciding where would be the best fit for her, Mission Hosp. or Tustin Rehab. probably. If you know anyone that have been through acute therapy at either of these places please leave us a message here and tell us their ratings. Keep you posted. She is eating and drinking well. Pray she will get the 'quiet' she needs (other patients and sounds) for her recovery. Thanks.

Looks like mom will be transferred by "week's end" doctor's say. A few have suggested an overall time slot theory since so many people will want to visit. Possibly someway to break it down so mom gets to spend quality time with you and rest in between visits. We will let you know with more info. Mom may just have her own table after mass with a sign up sheet! I keep telling her she's a rock star! We watched ballroom dancing last night she enjoyed that. Seems like she's getting her schedule back, being awake a larger part of the day.

You know how I've been telling mom she's a celebrity, I told her she's going to need an agent, there are about 80 different messages on this website alone, then I thought last night, geez mom's a celebrity and she's going to Rehab! I didn't even know she knew who Lindsay Lohan was! Anyway, after mom settles in today or tomorrow, doctor's not sure when she will make the transfer, we will let you know.

Last night was a great night. I had asked that Deacon Steve and Maryanne come by to pray with Mom. When Deacon Steve started singing, 'Praise the name of Jesus....' guess who joined in! Even if we can't understand every word just yet, her singing was still beautiful as it always was!
Today was a long day of waiting. We were all so anxious for the move today. Guess this journey is already teaching us much patience! Have to keep on reminding myself, In God's time!
I see how anxious Mom is too! It was a nice quiet day visitor wise, so she got rest and also did very well in Physical therapy. Hoping everything falls into place for a move to rehab tomorrow.
I want to say thank you to everyone for the overwhelming abundance of love and support! I can't believe that the Lord blessed me with such an amazing Mother! To see all the lives that she has touched just leaves me in awe! Your messages fill me with the warmth of God's love! Blessings to you all!

As Jenny mentioned Mom was transferred today. We are trying to prepare her for the hard work ahead. She says she wants to go home, and we have to remind her that first they are going to help her heal. As soon as we get familiar with her therapy schedule we will be able to arrange a 'visitor sign-up calendar.' Mom is so popular we figure this is the best way to make sure she gets the most out of her therapy as well as her needed rest!

I went to our prayer meeting tonight to sit in for Mom and receive a healing! I was reminded to not give up hope, my faith need only be the size of a mustard seed and that it is all in God's time! So I claimed Mom's healing and thanked the Lord for her full recovery, whenever that might be. What a wonderful feeling to be washed in the spirit! So as we all pray, please join me in not asking for a healing, but THANKING the Lord for the complete healing of my mother! And picture her smiling and dancing and being the beautiful 'full of life' woman that she is!

Spent the evening with Mom. Seemed to be a little sad when i first got there. But that's okay, there will be those kind of days. She cheered up when the boys got there. Had a lot of something to tell Frank but we couldn't quite make it out. One of the nurses came in and started taking to her about the rosary and how he prays his rosary every morning for breakfast. That made her smile and say "Oh, good!" She also repeated what our friend Sam from our prayer group wanted me to tell her....."Jesus is Lord!" She said it three times with a great big smile!

She had some therapy today. Dr. wants her to start training her right side. She can't do anything with her good side until she asks her brain to tell her right side to do it first, three times, then on the fourth try she can use her left hand.Tomorrow is her big day, with 3 hours of therapy scheduled. I know she'll do great, just maybe be a little wiped out at days end. Let's pray for her strength and courage for tomorrow!

My sisters and I are splitting up the days so that one of us is there to be a part of therapy sessions and doctor visits. So far this is working out well, giving us a chance to get back to our homes, families and work.

I know many are anxious to visit Mom, as we get more familiar with the therapy schedule we will plan a visiting chart, especially for our SEAS family. We will keep you posted!
Many thanks for the continued prayers!

Mom has confident therapists that want results, she started therapy on her right hand pushing down a long bar. There is something there and god-willing she will regain her strength. The afternoons are tough for mom, she definitely gets sad, which is common. We look forward to spending our time with her. The staff has commented to her what a loving familly she has with just the four of us there. They haven't seen nothing yet! I can tell Mom enjoys her daily message. She listens intently, then say "Ah, uh-huh." to who it is. Just keep envision her loving spirit. Thanks.

I just wanted to add one more note for today. As I recall Mom's speech therapy lesson, I am left in awe at the truly beautiful, faithful woman I call my Mother.

Erin, the speech therapist started with, " Well Rosina, why don't you start with telling me about your day, maybe what you had for breakfast or what you did...."
Mom said, quite clearly, "Well, first I thanked God for all my kids, then I asked for forgiveness. I prayed!"

Forgot to mention that yesterday, Tuesday, was Mom's first day on the Auto-Ambulator! A robotic treadmill used for stroke patients! I teased her and called her my own Bionic-Mom and made the 'bionic woman sounds!' They thought she wouldn't last more than 5 minutes, but she went for 7 & 1/2 minutes!

Today Mom had some special famiy visit. You could tell she was quite tired from another long workout day. She was so graceful in letting us know when she was ready for bed! Each day a few more words are connecting! Every now and then a full sentence will be very clear!

I am so thankful that my sister had the idea for this site. It has really proven to be a great resource. It has also been such a great way to finish my evening by seeing the loving and encouraging messages from all of you. Mom, especially, feels all the love when they are read to her!

HUGE day! I saw Mom move her right hand and foot! When she concentrates really hard, she tells her right foot or hand to move and it is starting to react! It is so cute how she stares at her hand and she just tells it, moooooove! It takes a couple tries but then all of a sudden it did move. We were so excited!

Every day I am just so taken by how my Mother is handling her situation! She is able to laugh at things I would be so frustrated at. I am sure she has that sense of frustration here and there but to see her laugh it off and be so patient with things is admirable!
What a beautiful spirit!

In the days ahead, I would like to ask for prayers for all those doctors and therapists working with my Mom as well as any insurance workers handling my Mom's case. We just want the Holy spirit to guide anyone encountering my Mother's file to make decisions that are in her best interest!

I had quite a busy day so I didn't get to spend alot of time with Mom today. When I got there my sisters said she had 'walked' along the bars. Still in need of assistance on the right side but quite an accomplishment all the same. The time we spent together we mostly laughed! Just laughing away the frustration of not knowing what we are saying to each other! We also sang together and prayed! The speech therapist said familiar songs are good to sing with her. She was right, Mom just starts singing along and some of the words come out correctly! We sang "Praise the name of Jesus', a song she is used to singing at our prayer group and she went 2 rounds! I love the quiet moments together when we can just hold each other and look forward to what tomorrow holds, because I know there will be more triumphs to thank God for, no matter how small.

She knows this is her job now, to work and heal. She is getting movement back on her right leg mostly, some on her right arm and hand. She can push and lift her right leg. It's amazing to see her do this. I wish all of you could see her, but just know that she is told daily by multiple employees how colorful her wall is with all the cards of well wishes, etc. I am confident my mom knows how loved she is and that is why she works so hard!

I couldn't help but get tears in my eyes today as Mom "walked" along a long corridor twice today. She may not be walking the same way we do, without thought, or without help or without a banister, yes she needs all these things.....but it is walking all the same! She is what they call between minimum and moderate help. Her weak hand is still her biggest challenge, but from what we hear the hand is, alot of times, the last to 'come back.'

Speech is still a challenge but we are now working on different ways to communicate so that we don't get frustrated. For instance using different words if she gets stuck on one, or pointing, or drawing a picture.

We are praying that insurance will approve a few more days for Mom's stay as it has been so beneficial for her. You can tell she has become a favorite of the nurses and therapists there, they often pop in to check on her even when she is not on their list for the day! Her smile and laughter is contagious!

It was nice seeing some of my 'SEAS' family this weekend! I had a bunch of hugs and kisses to take to my Mom yesterday! She thanks you for all the prayers!

As we prepare for Mom's return home we thought maybe we could ask any of you out there if someone might have a wheelchair that is not being used.... Mom's bedroom is upstairs so a second one to get to her room once up the stairs would be handy. Our family's backs would appreciate it, I imagine hauling a wheelchair up and down the stairs could get old pretty fast. Also, thank you so much for understanding Mom's need for a little privacy during this rehab time. Where I thought a 'sign up' approach for her SEAS church friends might work so that she not be overwhelmed it has turned out that she has been able to really focus on rehab and the time has gone so quickly. Once she settles in at home I am sure she will welcome the company.

Thank you for the continued prayers and wonderful messages!

Even now, one month later, it sometimes still feels like I am in a dream. It's still hard to believe that it is MY Mom who is re-learning how to walk, and talk. A dear friend, whose Mom had a stroke, told me to prepare for the roller coaster ride. Oh and what a ride it has been! I never had any idea how an event like this changes lives! So many simple things in life that we take for granted that you learn to really appreciate!

As anxious as Mom is, and we are, to have Mom return home we are very pleased that 1 more week was approved. Mom will be returning home on Wednesday, August 20! They had us in a bit of a panic, for just a short time though, by telling us tomorrow was her release date. We are trying to prepare her house for wheelchair access, and her chair lift to get up the stairs won't be here until Friday!

We also just feel so strongly about the therapy she receives there! The 3 hours a day, though quite a workout, has done her so good! We know in another week we will see many more good changes!

Yes, Change! So many changes..... Another dear friend reminded me of a prayer this morning that I have been finding myself using more often this last month,

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change,
the courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference
AMEN!

I didn't think of it till now, but that is probably why she was really trying to get out of her set of exercises when I got there this evening! She does 3 sets of ten, 3 times a day on each of her weak joints. The stairs were probably such a workout, no wonder I got THE look when I said its time for 3 sets!

We have 3 big days ahead! Lot's to do at the house. We are also going to try and be at the hospital as much as possible to get the last of all of our training. I think back to the first few days of Mom being in the hospital and how scared I was that she wouldn't be herself again. Sometimes it feels like it was just yesterday. I know many of you would like to see mom. I know it's probably hard to wonder how she is doing without seeing her and you may have a vision in your head and would like to know just how she's doing. We've asked mom a few times and if you can imagine not being able to clearly speak and not feeling your best, well it's hard to want to have visitors just yet. Little by little mom will feel more and more comfortable with this situation and want and need her family and friends near. Thank you for understanding and please continue to think and envision mom up and walking!

Subject: Day by Day

Just spent a few days with Mom. I like when a day or two passes between our time together because the progress is so evident! Her weak arm is moving so much now! All of her fingers now wiggle and she bends her elbow quite well! She is transferring from her wheelchair with a little more ease! Just like they told us from the beginning, we will see progress day by day!

Subject: Night on the town!

I can really tell how far along Mom has come just in transferring her from the wheelchair to the bed or couch. She pretty much does all the work herself, I basically just have my hand around her safety belt just in case! She is still working hard!

This past weekend was a memorable one! Mom finally got to go out on the town! We took her to her brother's retirement party. It was so exciting for her to finally get out and do something a little different. Everyone was so thrilled to see her. She saw all her brothers, sisters, neices, nephews and a few cousins! It was a bit overwhelming at first but she was quite happy to be a part of a family gathering! Luckily the next day was a Sunday so there were no therapy appts. scheduled as she really needed the rest! In fact I was with her yesterday and she still seemed to be a little on the tired side! I imagine it was not only physically exhausting but mentally and emotionally as well, afterall her last evening out was the night before her stroke. I know, as tiring as it was for her, the night will play a big part of her motivation in the days ahead!

Subject: Why me?

Mom and I spent some time in the backyard this weekend. I helped her tend to some plants then just enjoyed the fresh air! We did some of her speech exercises and some verses from the bible. I told her about how I thought of her all through mass. Father's homily kept bringing me back to my Mom. If anyone has been a shining example of accepting what life has in store for us with grace and undoubting faith in God to get through any situation , it is my Mom. She is still smiling, laughing at herself when words come out completely different than what she meant. She does her exercises even when you can tell she'd rather not. Not once has she said "Why me?" She has only continued praising her God as she always did. This makes me think of one question......"why me?" Why did God choose me to have such an extraordinary mother? I guess I will try to be more like mom and just praise and thank Him for such a special gift!

We celebrated my son, Roman's birthday at Mom's this weekend. Lot's of happiness and laughter filled the air! As Mom becomes more independent I can see how very hard it is for her to still not be able to do everything she used to. She has a tradition of taking the boys on a special shopping day with Grandma for their birthdays. She was very emotional about not being able to take Roman out. She told him that when she is better she won't forget about their shopping day!
Today Mom has a follow up appt. with her doctor. We are praying that he will request continued home care approval from the insurance company. Although she has come quite a long way, her therapists feel she would greatly benefit from continuing home therapy opposed to out-patient. Just the task of getting there could still be exhausting for Mom, and she wouldn't get the most out of the appts.
Thank you for the continued prayers and support!

First, I just want to apologize for not getting on to update you family and friends as often! Don't find much time to actually get on the computer as much.

Mom is still impressing us with her progress. She doesn't see it much, and would probably like to be further along in recovery! To the rest of us there is still continual progress. She has been able to read through the cards she receives from start to finish all on her own! Communicating is always harder at the end of the day when she is tired, but we get through the day pretty smoothly now. She is forced, or should I say encouraged by her daughters, to walk as much as possible to get to the restroom, if time allows, or to walk to the chair lift or the dinner table. It takes quite a while and she can get a little tired, but she will benefit in the long run!
Her home therapy continues, so please keep up the prayers for those behind the desk at the insurance company!
So things are still coming along. We are thankful for the progress we see no matter how small! Thanks you for the continued prayers!

Hi friends and family!
Things are going well at the Mendez house! Mom still has home therapy. She continues to push herself to do her excersizes. She often talks to me about not knowing what God's plan is for her....she keeps praying for His guidance to know what work she is to do here. Every now and then I think, wow, life is so different! But then I remember that the changes in my life don't even compare to what Mom is going through! I have just added spending some time with my Mom to my schedule, (can't complain about that!)....her world is completely different, no work, no legion of Mary, no book club, no crusillo, no prayer group! I hope that little by little as she recovers, the Lord's plan will be revealed!
Also, by month's end my family and I should be all moved into Mom's. Boy's are excited about a change...they enjoy helping mom with her speech therapy and such! It should ease up this schedule that my sister's and I are keeping right now and we just decided that it is where we need to be....Please keep our transition in your prayers!

Just a quick update, need to get back to Mom's...
I wanted to be sure and let you all know that last week Mom went all the way up the stairs with her physical therapist! Quite an accomplishment! It's not something she does everyday, but I am sure it was quite motivating for her to see that she could do it!
I was so proud!
There is alot going on at her house, besides us moving in there were a few projects she had on the back burner that we decided to get done now that she will be home more.
Yesterday she enjoyed another outing! It was her granddaughters first birthday! She enjoyed time with family and friends!
I will try and check in again by week's end, as I am sure there will be more progress to report!
Blessings to you all!

Hi family and friends!
Boy the month has just gotten away from me! Can't believe only one more week left!
Mom's home therapy continues! She got approval for more visits! Her assesment went quite well, he was very pleased with all that she could do!
We are all anxious to get moved and settled! The boys are excited to be more of a part of her therapy! Baron especially likes to do word games with her!
Mom has been very toudhed by all of the cards and well wishes...she has had many 'happy tears!' We are all so grateful of how you have all reached out to us during these last few months. There is so much to be thankful for!
Hope everyone has a peaceful week!

What a week! Lots going on with the move. We are not exactly 'settled', but we are all moved over! I am anxious to get everything in place because I know Mom doesn't like to see her home turned upside down! She has been very patient with us and all of our things that have taken over her living room and garage!
Last Friday Mom came with us to the boys school costume parade! She enjoyed all the kids and seeing some friends. She was so touched at everyone who told her they continue with their prayers for her!
Mom is doing great trying to stay away from the wheelchair...walking as much as possible. We are awaiting more approvals for home therapy, as there were some insurance changes. Mom has been very fortunate to receive home therapy for so long! We know all your prayers are making the difference!
Mom is anxious to have all of her speech back! Though she gets through a conversation quite well, it is the most frustrating for her to not communicate as she used to.
We know this month will bring much more progress, and we will try to keep you informed as often as possible!

We had a good week with Mom. Busy but starting to get a little more settled. Mom is adjusting to the boys quite well. We laugh alot, it is quite different that raising 3 girls!
Right now Mom is awaiting another assessment since her primary insurance has changed. The way things are playing out is really fortunate as she just might be able to get another round of in-home therapy!
Mom is really good about walking most of the day, we only use the wheelchair at night when she is tired or, of course, when we go out.
Last Friday she went to see the boys in their talent show at school then we went for frozen yogurt afterwards! She really enjoyed seeing all the kids performing. Children can really lift your spirits!

Subject: Thank you Lord, for this Healing!

Last night was a special night for Mom and I...we went to our prayer meeting! We hadn't been in quite a while. I am so happy she decided to go! It felt so good to be with a few special friends and pray together. We especially prayed over mom for her complete recovery. We are thanking God for this healing. Mom was encouraged to go through her day believing she is healed...using her right hand and walking, and just proclaiming her complete restoration! As I said from day one, I just know in my heart God is using her in such a Big way! Afterall, what a way to touch so many people!
Speaking of which, I have a good story......
We are always teasing Mom about how popular she is. We can't take her anywhere with out her running into someone she knows! I mean anywhere, out of city, out of state. Well as it turns out now not even we can go anywhere without running into someone that knows mom! Last week Frank had to go to Florida for work and he sat by someone on the plane that knows mom, an old long time parishoner of SEAS, our church!

Subject: Christmas cheer is finally here!

Mom has finally started her outpatient therapy. The physical therapist was impressed with the range of motion she had on her weak side! She rode the bicycle for 10 minutes, and wasn't even winded or anything! She even has a new exercise program for home! She will have therapy 3 times a week, for physical that is. She will have her first speech therapy appt. this Thursday. Unfortunately we are on a waiting list for occupational therapy. So please pray for a spot to open up soon, if that is God's will!

After her appt. on Monday, Mom wanted to go Christmas shopping! She said there are so many places she wants to go! So we went out for a few hours, she was on the search for things for her grandkids! Over the weekend she had fun watching the boys put together her Christmas village, with her help! We finally got around to getting out some Christmas boxes, ( oh my goodness, no more boxes! ) She is looking forward to the activities at the boys school next week, like Roman's class play and international potluck! Took us a while but I think the Christmas spirit has finally found us!

Wow! Those holidays just came and took us by surprise! Here and gone so fast!
Mom had a cozy Christmas at home with her kids and grandkids. We all made it to mass, Mom's first time back! We kind of snuck in through the back side entrance so it wouldn't be too overwhelming for mom! (You know how she is a celebrity and all.....) Then we celebrated at home and just ordered Chinese! That was something new, and the best part, no cooking and no dishes! We all just wanted to be together and relax!
New Years was also a kick back day for us! Mom had just finished 3 days in a row of therapy so we let her have the day off! She needed the rest!
Mom's schedule is quite busy as her therapy is now outpatient. She goes in 3 times a week. She is always impressing the therapists with her progress!
We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday!

Yesterday I took Mom to her dear friends funeral. He died from a stroke. I found myself crying tears of joy, for I was not crying for Mr. Vogt, afterall he is rejoicing with his savior, I was crying and thanking God that I was sitting in that pew with my Mother!

Mom took her grandkids to the Valentine Dance at church last night!
She was a bit hesitant but with a little encouragement decided to go. It has been a tradition for her and the kids and didn't want some silly little stroke being the reason to break tradition! She enjoyed seeing some friends and the food was delicious!
She is happy that tomorrow her therapy department is closed for the holiday! I warned her that we were still going to have to do a little exercise!
While we were walking out to the car today I got so excited....all of a sudden Mom was almost gliding while walking! Not using too much pressure on the cane and taking almost normal steps! She had a big smile on her face! She is so encouraged by those moments!
I know I don't report much lately but i thought there still might be a few of you checking in on Mom. If there are still some of you reading this....please drop us a note or e-mail me to let me know if I should continue with the updates! Thanks and God Bless!

Dear friends and family,
We have good news to share but first I will update you on Mom's therapy! It is going quite well! She is getting pushed to reach her goals everyday! She is so worked she usually takes a nap after therapy days. Around the house we are trying to let her do more things for herself. This will help her to get back to her independence! Ther is much movement in her weak hand! Even her walking is getting a little 'smoother.' I feel so blessed to be able to be here everyday and see this miraculous recovery!

Now for a little story.....back in November a friend of ours, Deacon Steve from church nominated Mom to go on a healing pilgrimage with the Order of Malta to Lourdes, France! Mom got the news this week that out of hundreds that applied, Mom was selected to go! She is beyond thrilled! She cries happy tears at the mention of the trip! As many of you know she has had a special devotion to the Blessed Mother for many years! This trip will mean so much to her! I am so blessed to be able to go as her caregiver and Stefanie will be going as a volunteer! The trip is April 28 to May 6, it's just around the corner! Please join us in offering up prayers of thanksgiving for this wonderful blessing!
Hope all is well with you! Oh, Mom also wanted to send her love to everyone! She said she wished she could type her own message, I told her that day will come soon!
Love and Hugs to all!

Subject: graduation!

Great news, Mom has graduated to a single point cane without using the foot brace! She had been using a Quad Cane, which has four small supports on the floor. This provided much more support. Although we still need to spot her every step she will no longer have to use her foot brace and will only have minimal support from the cane which will force her to be a bit more independant! She is so thrilled to not have to use the foot brace anymore, it was quite awkward and somewhat uncomfortable for her! The therapist would also like her to start attempting the flight of stairs, up AND down! She has done it a few times, but not on a regular basis.
I have also noticed that when speaking on the phone her conversations are going much smoother. Of course it all depends on what time of day it is! Catch her after a workout and she might get stuck on a few words here and there. But overall not so much stumbling!
It is so exciting to watch her progress! She is amazing!

Terrific news to share.....
This past Monday while Jenny took Mom to therapy they had a BIG moment!
Mom had a different therapist that was filling in that day. He apparaently did a few Chiropractic moves on her back, then Mom took some steps, then he decided Mom didn't need the cane! Mom took more than 15 steps WITHOUT the use of a cane! She had tears in her eyes! How encouraging for her! Now, she hasn't put it down completely yet, but now we can see that day coming a lot sooner than we thought!
Less than one year ago my Mom was laying in a bed unable to move anything on the right side of her body...
I believe because of her deep faith and the power of prayerand alot of hard work, she is up and about and SO close to walking independently! I am so thankful that my boys get to witness this incredible recovery! they will see that no matter what challenge God allows in our life, He is always there with us through it all, and ANYTHING is possible!

We are 18 days away from our big trip! I want to say thank you to our very generous friends from our church community who have contributed to helping to make this trip possible for me! It means so much to my Mom and I to be able to make this journey together! We attended a dinner last week and were able to meet some other people going on the pilgrimage Of course Mom knew some people and they were so excited that we'd all be in the same group! We'll be sure and take lots of pictures!

We are looking forward to a fun Easter day, there is so much to be thankful for! Wishing all of you family and friends a blessed holiday!

First, my apologies for not updating sooner, computer was down for a while, and just trying to adjust back to reality!

Where do I begin? What an absolutely amazing journey we had!
Beautiful place, beautiful people, beautiful feeling! We were, what I like to call, "drenched in God's Love!"
Mom was treated like the Queen that she is! The Order of Malta were the most compassionate, loving people!
Our first day there we experienced the baths, which began a week of unforgetable moments! A highlight for us both was the candlelight procession! Thousands of people, many nationalities, many languages, all praying & singing together the rosary! We were crying the whole time!
There are so many things to share! We will hopefully be able to share with you all individually! I am having some trouble uplaoding a picture for you, I will see if I can get some help.....
Mom did quite well on the flights and I think we are now back to the swing of things around here. Yesterday her physical therapist was quite pleased at how she walked around the 2nd floor with no cane! So please continue your prayers for her progression!
As time permits, (work is crazy right now) I will try and get on and share bits and pieces of our memorable journey!
Blessings to all!

First forgive me for not updating as often as I'd like. Year-end school activities are consuming us!

Mom is also very busy! She has been getting quite the workouts! We are back to boot camp! Her therapist has given her a big goal.... no cane by July 12! Yes, exactly one year after her stroke. I know she can do it! She gets a little discouraged at times, but we don't let her get distracted.
Her occupational therapists is quite pleased at how her arm is doing. It is getting stronger every day!

Not a day goes by where we don't think or speak of our Lourdes trip! It's still so fresh in our memory! I was thinking about the mass we attended in the underground basilica. There were about 30,000 people of all different nationalities. We were all singing and praying together! It was a beautiful feeling to be united with so many of God's children!

Well, they are really cracking the whip at Mom's therapy! I told you about her goal of no cane, now speech is getting challenging! She has a new therapist for speech, she is one of the top 3 in the country who work with Apraxia ( which is how Mom is challenged most) She says she will work her hard! Mom wasn't thrilled but I know that her speech has probably been her biggest obstacle all year. I am praying that she sees the difference fast so she will be encouraged to work even harder.

We got to visit with our new friend that we met on our Lourdes trip, Michael. He met us at my sister's house last weekend and we got to watch his movies and reminisce! Please also keep him in your prayers as he will be starting a harsh 8 week course of radiation for his cancer.

Wow! I can't believe it's been a month since last update! So sorry! Working more than I have in years, my boss, an attorney, is about to start the biggest trial of his life! I will try to get back to the program and let you dear friends and family know of Mom's progress.

Well, for one thing, therapy is the most intense it has ever been! Her therapy sessions are harder and her home workouts are longer and more intense! She is pulling through though! Some days, maybe a bit discouraged and not so thrilled to do any exercises, but a little nudge and she's back on track. She has a new speech therapist who is apparently one of the top in the country! She only uses the wheelchair for long trips like going to the fair or something. The cane will be put away soon!
There is always a new goal to meet and so far she meets them with flying colors!
She is enjoying the summer with her grandchildren going to the fair, movies and celebrating birthdays!
Please continue to keep Mom in your prayers as she pushes towards her goal of complete recovery!

Well I won't lie, Mom raised me better than that! It's been a rough few weeks! Could really use prayers!
Mom is in a bit of a slump it seems. We are trying to keep her spirits up. Can always count on my son Baron to keep her laughing though!
Mom was unfortunately dropped from physical therapy as they weren't seeing the usual progress. We will continue with exercises at home so that hopefully in a month or so we can get a referral to get re-accessed! Occupational and Speech therapy are still going well. Occupational might be coming to an end soon, but her speech therapist says she will be seeing her for a long time! We are trying to make sure Mom is doing alot of things for herself at home as this will help her occupational therapy. We are happy that speech will continue, that is what is most frustrating for her. She can't tell the difference but we see her improving!

Mom went to my sisters this weekend and got in the pool for the first time since her stroke! They said she stayed in with Ella, her youngest grand daughter, for hours! We are hoping to use the pool alot more for therapy too! It makes it alot easier for her!

Hope everyone is enjoying their summer! We appreciate the continued prayers! God bless!

God Bless!
