Diagnosis: Car Accident

Introduction
On Sunday, October 11th, Rosey and Haleigh were driving on Wilmington Road to Great Wolf Lodge for a Girl Scout trip. They were struck by a drunk driver who smashed in the front end of the vehicle about 5 pm. Upon impact Rose's car went into the ditch and began to catch fire. Two men, one with a fire extinguisher, pulled Haleigh from the front passenger seat where her legs were pinned into the dash. Rosey, meanwhile, climbed through the back console out the back driver door. They were rushed by careflight to the hospital in the same helicoptor. Rosey was taken first to Miami Valley and then Haleigh to Children's. Rosey had a broken right hand and torn ligaments in her right foot and her left knee was injured. Mark met Haleigh at the hospital along with his parents. She had broken both femurs (upper leg) and her left arm. She was taken into surgery and stayed there for about three hours. She came out and was in recovery around midnight. Rosey was released from the hospital and met everyone at Childrens around 3am. They remain at Childrens hospital.

Subject: Update

Haleigh got her bright pink cast on her arm today and was given a stabalizer for her right leg. She has broken her right femur just above the growth plate and has three pins in that leg. Her left femur was broken in two places. Above the knee and about mid-thigh where she has coat hanger like nails that hold the bones in place. Her arm was broken on the left thumbside above the wrist where she has three pins and now a PINK cast. If that doesn't sound like Haleigh, I don't know what does! Rosey has an appointment Friday to get at cast and get her injuries looked at.

Subject: HERO among us!

Today one of the men who pulled Haleigh from the accident took a chance and came to see her. He was so glad to see her and so glad she was doing well. In all of our eyes, he was a true hero and if it werent for him, she would'nt have made it. He said he was just doing what any person would have done. He is truely appreciated and we are so greatful that he was put there for a purpose that day. ANGELS ARE AMONG US!
We also are thankful to the other man who had the fire extinguisher and helped pull her out. To all the women and men who helped that day, thank you from all of our hearts. To Mike Partin of Wilmington who pulled our Haleigh out of that car, you are a True Hero.

Rosey went home last night with me and got a good nights sleep. Came back around ten this morning and Haleigh was doing good and awake. She said last night her dad was snoring and she had to throw one of the 7 bears sittin on her bed at him to wake him up. She slept well and looked good. She has been doing breathing exercises and waiting to test out her new wheels!

Subject: WHEELCHAIR!!

Well...
The physical therapist came. She is a very sweet and nice lady. We were able to get her in the chair very easily and pain free! Dad wheeled her around the unit and into the waiting room where some friends were waiting. She was very excited to be in the chair and loved sitting up. She sat up and fed herself. They allowed her to take the IV off and as long as she keeps drinking plenty of fluid, she shouldn't need it back on. There is a possiblilty that she may need a pint of blood tonight since her h&h is still kind of low. Everything is going great!

Subject: Blood Transfusion

Haleigh's levels had dropped so she did have a blood transfusion last night...This was a 4 hour process and she did experience pretty a fair amount of discomfort for the first couple of hours...We had a scare about 1/2 way through when her temperature suddenly spiked to over 100 degrees....Her temp dropped back as quickly as it went up and all was well...We put a hot pack on her hand where the port was and her blood vessels expanded making the rest of the transfusion must more bearable...Her levels are back up today so the transfusion was successful...

Subject: Recovery

Haleigh has been doing a lot better here at home. She has good days and bad days. Today was a GREAT day. We began the day by making a schedule for her for many things. One being the therapy we put together for her to loosen her stiff muscles and joints. We take about 30-45 minutes stretching everything from her neck to back to legs.
She had her first homeade treatment session at noon and did great. She sat for about an hour with her knees bent in the sitting position in her wheelchair. She did so good! She even is getting to the potty seat all by herself with just a little help moving her legs.
After spending about 2 hours cleaning her up and with therapy, we took her out to enjoy the weather. We took her to the mailbox and back to get a huge pile of cards! That made her very happy. Thank you to all of you who sent cards. She needed the fresh air in her lungs and we hope it is this nice tomorrow so we can go out again.
After having some visitors and watching the Bengals game, we finished a our first puzzle.
We stuck to out plan to do another therapy session at 9pm and it went WONDERFUL! She was able to lay completely flat, which she has not done yet, move her legs almost into the sitting split postition and lift both of them to a "right angle" (90 degrees) with a spotting hand. We were so proud of her! She even said she was proud of herself, which was great to hear a positive attitude like the kid we know. She was even so proud of herself she wanted to move with what we call "butt walkin" to the potty instead of being lifted which was AWESOME because she was so worn out and pushing herself!
Went to bed earliest in a week.... 10pm! Feels good to be getting into a scheduled routine again!

Subject: WOW

Today went well...she got a shower and all cleaned up!
The best part was that Shane, Emily, and Gracie Shope brought up something very special. Shane brought Haleigh a signed football from Carson Palmer that he wrote get well soon. It was amazing that Carson Palmer cared that much. Shane knows the equipment manager for the team and told him the story, which in turn he signed the ball! We have gotten so many wonderful gifts from everyone, thank you so much!

Subject: A walk/ride :)

Sherill and I took Hail outside today for a walk. She was glad to get out. After gettin the mail, we decied we were not ready to go back in yet, and we traveled down the Reeve's lane to take a walk, or ride in her case. We discussed that she will like taking many walks now since she won't get tired at all. She enjoyed the sunshine and we spent about half an hour outside.
We had a great day here and she is doing good with therapy still. We are all very proud of her and she is proud of herself.
Thank you again to everyone who has sent gifts, food, candy, and stopped by.

Subject: Transfers

Haleigh is becoming more independent every day. With the help of the home health therapy she is able to get to her wheel chair from bed and back with minimal help. She can also move to the potty seat with almost no help if necessary. She is glad to become less dependent and likes doing things on her own.
Thank you to everyone who came to the Halloween party! It really meant a lot to her and all of us. She still talks about her dad dressing up as Pocahontas and all of the left over hot dogs! :)
This week she should start more therapy and on Wednesday gets her pins out of her wrist and a new cast....still debating on the color...feel free to write a message on what color you vote for. I said she should ask if they make glow-in-the-dark.
Thanks for all of the prayers and calls along with cards, food, and presents.

Subject: Pins

THE PINS ARE OUT!!!
We went to the doctor today at Children's for our first visit back. When the doctor saw the xrays we had today, he couldn't believe how fast she has been healing. We just thought that the pin in her arm was coming out and getting recasted. The doctor decided that pins were ready to come out of the leg too and her arm was ready to not be casted. She has a brace and no pins and is feeling much better! No more pin treatment!
