Jim remains heavily medicated in order to control his pain. All the gauze is now off his left leg and they continue to clean it up. He has a broken tibula & fibula that has a device that is anchored to his ankle and his femur then has wires running through his calf and shin in order to support the brace. I have the clinical name for the contraption, but Brad has my notebook in Dayton and will not be home until tomorrow. I will put the technical term in tomorrow's update. Amy and I came home this afternoon. Brad, Christine and Peter are at the hospital with Karen. It will be a long road, so we are going to do our best to relieve Christine from the vigil she continues to hold by living at the hospital. Thank God she has the flexibility to do that.

Jim will have another sugery on Tuesday for a wash out of his open belly. Please pray for him as he enters his 5th surgery. They are hoping to close him up some tomorrow. Please pray for him during this time and for his quick recovery.

Thanks so much for the messages. I will call Karen and read them to her until they can get her internet access. Each one is precious and will be kept so they can read them when this difficult time passes.

Jim had surgery today and came out fine. He is basically no better, no worse. They were able to close his belly up some. There are now a kind of velcro pieces on each side holding his belly together. I inquired about benchmarks we can be looking for so that we know what step we are looking for and what the next step is in his recovery. He will go in for another surgery Friday and hopefully, his diuretics will continue to work and his body will flush more fluid and they will be able to close him up on Friday. They are watching the pressure in his belly since it is closed tightly. If the pressure builds, they may have to loosen it.
His blood pressure has stabilized and they only check it once per hour - big improvement!!
They will continue to keep him sedated and this requires the ventilator.
The way I am understanding it is this:

Close up the belly

Decrease sedation

Remove ventilator

I am a step & goal oriented thinker, so this helps me keep clear what we're working for and when we can check things off to know what the next goal is.

There are no signs of any kind of infection yet, but sometimes that comes later. Usually after 3 weeks in the hospital. So, pray that his belly is closed up soon, so there is less chance of that.

We are loving all the messages, please continue to leave them and we'll pass them along.

Dad is still holding his own today. The nurse said he still has a lot of pain but that is expected and they continue to give meds to help with that. They did a bronchoscope last night and got some "junk" out of his lungs. They started heavy duty antibiotics for infection. The vent is set so that he does part of the breathing on his own and the vent helps with the rest. They started feeding him through an NG tube and he seems to be tolerating it well. The big thing at this point is to get the swelling down in the belly. So a specific prayer request would be for the swelling in the bowels to go down enough to get the abdomen closed soon. He continues to recognize us when we visit. Karen got to visit spend some time with him today. --Christine

Jim has developed a serious infection. They have him on strong antibiotics to fight it and they now have him on an adavan (sp?) drip for the pain. He is going to stay heavily sedated in order to alleviate his pain while fighting the infection. He is having surgery on his belly to try to close it up on Friday at 2:15 p.m. If they cannot close completely, he will have surgery again on Monday and that is the last chance to get it closed. If not, they will put in a mesh matrix that will allow the skin to grow over and through it while healing. It may not be pretty, but let's face it - who ever saw his belly before????
So, we are not worried about that. He will also have surgery on Sunday to repair his ulna - the bone between the wrist and the elbow - which has never been operated on since the accident. It was not serious, so they put it off as long as they could.
Brad and I are going to Dayton today to move Karen into her apartment, so I will speak with his surgeon and nurses to get a better grasp of what kind of infection and all the details so I can acurately relay the information to all of you.

Please donate blood at the blood drive on Monday from 10-4 at Fairview Mission Church, if you are able. This cause is very dear to the family and we are hoping for a really big turnout. You can call 1-800-givelife to schedule your appointment.

Thanks again for all your prayers and continue to pray for Jim's body to fight the infection.

Dad did have surgery today around 12:30. they said he made it through just fine all his vitals stayed good. They were able to close his stomach a little more. They did take off more fluid and have put in large sutures so they can try to close it up more each day from the bedside and not have to take him in to surgery. If it is not closed by Wednesday they will put in the mesh. They are thinking they might have to give him more blood but are not sure at this time. He was more alert today and is aware we are there. please continue praying for him and please give blood.

Jim just came out of surgery and here is the recap:

Dr. Binsky - Ortho Surgeon Fixed the ulna bone (bone from wrist to elbow). Had the put in a plate because of the damage. They put on a hard cast to stabilize his arm.

They re-adjusted the left leg with the computer. They can now tweek that "taylor spacial" aparatus from his bedside from now on.

The took skin from his left thigh to skin graft his left ankle. The will leave that bandaged for 5-7 days.

They also saw a couple of spots on his leg & foot that may need skin grafts later, but they will watch those.

The velcro on his belly came off during surgery - unexpected, but they called in his trauma surgeon, Dr. Paisley, and he removed the velco, washed out his belly and put the hemavac back on to release more fluid. It wasn't in the plan, but was no big deal. His trauma surgeon is Dr. McCarthy, she is the head of trauma and will be back in tomorrow. She will decide then when his last surgery on his belly will be to put in the mesh matrix to finally close him up.

Dr. Paisley said he is still pulling fluid from his body - he pulled 1 liter yesterday and that is their goal is to lose 1 liter daily. He is still up 14 liters of fluid.

He pulled through 7 hours of surgery today and his vitals stayed strong. That is a great sign.

Continue to pray that his body heals itself and that he continues to give Karen the signs she needs to know he is hanging in there so she doesn't worry so much.

We appreciate each and every one of you who take the time to read his updates and continue to pray for his recovery.

Not much new to report today. They started using the feeding tube again last night and Jim seems to be tolerating it well so far. We have been waiting to hear from the doctors on when they will do the next surgery to try to close the abdomen. We expect they will put the "mesh" in at that time to get it sealed. He always knows us when we talk to him. Sometimes he tries to mouth words but can't really talk with the trach.

Keep up the prayers!

Hi! We wanted to give you the latest so you could be sure to keep Jim in your prayers tonight and tomorrow. He will be going in to surgery tomorrow (don't have a time yet) to try to close the abdomen. The doctor said that they will use the "mesh" called Alloderm, but the area that needs covered is so big that they might not be able to cover it all. If they can't cover it all they will have to put the vac back on and try again another time. They are hoping to get some more fluid off overnight and hope that some of the swelling goes down. Then they will try to close as much as possible (pull the skin together) so they don't have to use as much of the Alloderm. We really need to be able to get the abdomen closed so he can move forward.

The doctors did another bronch today to look at his left lung because it didn't look so good on the x-ray. They were afraid of infection, but think it's more likely lots of fluid. The doc said today that he's up 24 liters of fluid based on "ins and outs."

It will help his lungs if they can get the belly closed so he can start sitting up more.

The doctors and nurses here seem to be keeping on top of things and we are grateful for the care he's getting.

We are so thankful for all of you who are thinking about us everyday and praying for us. It means a lot!!

Dad went to surgery today @ noon was in until 5. They put the "mesh" in his abdomen today so it is now closed!!! They had to connect 8 pieces then put them on him this is why surgery was so long. Dr Mcarthy said that there was a slight infection on the edge of his skin at the top and bottom of the opening. They are testing it to see if the antibiotic he is on now will treat it or if he needs a new one. She felt this was probably due to the repeated stitching. She said we will not see the positive benefits of this for 48 to 72 hours. His body should start draining it's self to get rid of the extra fluids. This is most likely his last big surgery for a while which will also help the fluid loss . Dr. Mcarthy also did say that all his organs and muscles inside did look good and healthy.
thanks for your continued prayers!!

Jim seems to be doing well today. He tried to talk to us when we visited this morning. Since he's on the vent he has to "mouth" when he tries to talk. We wish we were better at lip reading! We have to guess what he's asking. He was asking about how long he has to stay here and what his injuries are. He seems to understand what we say. They switched the mode on the vent today for a while so that he was breathing all on his own. They will probably have to assist more when he has more pain meds or is more sedated, but it's nice to know he can breathe on his own for a while.

We still need lots of prayers for continued healing. We tell him it will only be a couple weeks, but it will probably be longer. Dr. McCarthy told us yesterday that he will probably forget that he asked so it doesn't matter so much what we answer about the length of stay. (It's the meds that will make him forget.)

We did understand when he "said" he wanted the tubes OUT of his nose today. We told him just a little longer. So, he's just as stubborn as ever.

Not much change to report, Just wanted to let you know they moved dad to a new room yesterday. They moved him to the burn ICU, due to the fact that they are better trained and experienced in changing and caring for his dressings on the skin graph and the mesh closing. Also another positive is the burn unit has less sickly germs floating around. His new room number is 3210. Visitations are still limited to immediate family only.

Thanks for all your prayers and messages.

Dad & Blake riding around driveway

Jim was resting most of the day. He seemed a little restless some of the time. They put his bed into a "chair" position--kind of like a laid back Lazy Boy--for a while so he could try sitting up more. Not sure that was too comfortable.

The docs changed the dressing on his stomach today. They said it looked good.

They also took another x-ray of this right wrist. They told us they had x-rayed it a few times, but the doc today said they only x-rayed the hand and not the wrist or forearm. He has complained of pain in it since he came in. It's very swollen and is the only place they take blood from so those are reasons enough for pain, but he doesn't seem to move it quite right so we wanted them to check it again.

The exciting thing for the day was they started to wean him off the vent. He was switched over to just "blow by" oxygen and seemed to do very well. He seemed to be more comfortable than with the little bit of vent he started the day with. They said they would put him back on the vent to sleep then off again in the morning and try to see how long he can go in the day. They were trying 3-4 hours tonight to start out.

Keep up the prayers!! They are really helping.

We had a nice surprise when we got to the hospital today. When we said "good morning" Jim said "Good Morning" back to us (and we could hear it!). They had fitted his trach with a cap so he could talk for a while. He had lots of questions since he doesn't really remember the past few weeks. It was still a little hard to understand him so we had to guess the best we could. Sometimes he laughed at us (we're grateful for his sense of humor) other times he rolled his eyes at us. He could only have the cap on for about an hour then they switched back to regular trach. They said it's harder to breathe with the cap so it wears him out. He remained alert all day. It was harder to understand him when he was just "mouthing" things to us. He wanted to have a drink of water but isn't allowed to yet. We were allowed to give him a sponge soaked in ice water so he had to settle for that. They will do another swallow test tomorrow to see if he can start to have something to drink.

The intern talked to us instead of an attending doctor, so we didn't get a lot of info today. They are starting to talk about where they might want to send him next--that made us a little nervous. But, the nurses said it wouldn't be right away. She told us they have to do another skin graft on his leg.

Please pray that the doctors continue to make the best decisions for his care and for his continued healing.

We are thankful for all the messages and well-wishes and prayers!!

Jim was having speech therapy when we arrived today. The speech therapist helps to make sure he is able to swallow properly and wil give the okay for when he can have real food again. Today he got to have ice chips. He liked that.

They removed the ventilator from the room this morning, so he's just on oxygen and moist air. They had his trach capped again so he could talk for a short time, but that wears him out fast.

He will be staying in the Burn ICU for a while longer. This unit is also specializes in skin grafts and he needs to have another one done on his leg. This surgery is scheduled for Friday. They will take the skin and tissue from his right arm to put on his lower left leg. They will be doing some tests tomorrow to find out more about how involved the procedure will be. They want to check how blood is flowing in the arteries in the lower leg around where the skin needs replaced. The procedure will include connecting arteries with the graft. This area of skin is very close to the bone so they want to protect it as much as possible. Please pray for this surgery to go well since his leg could be risk.

He "talked" to us today, but we still have trouble understanding what he's trying to say. HIs meds keep him a little "foggy".

We appreciate all the support--we need it!

Just a quick update tonight. Jim has surgery scheduled for 7:45 am so we have to be at the hospital by 6:30 am to see him before he goes in. They will be doing the graft on his leg. I think the doctor called it a "radial free flap". As we mentioned last night, they are taking the skin and tissue from the forearm to put in the lower left leg. The ortho surgeon will be there to move some of the pins from the frame so the plastic surgeon can do the surgery. There is a chance that they might have to go to a plan B, but won't know until they get in there. The plan B would be if something would prevent them from doing the flap as desired.

He was a little out of sorts and restless early today, but was settled good when we left this evening.

Keep those prayers coming! It's still a long road ahead.

1949 Thunderbird - Duffy's "Bird 'n a Box"

We saw Jim today and sat with him for quite a little while. He was as ornary as ever! Brad put 'LaBamba' movie into the DVD player and when they were singing on the movie, he started singing along - it was great! He looks terrific and is doing so much better. I have not been here for 2 weeks and the difference in him is so terrific - he looks like himself again and is really responding well.
Brad and Karen went this morning and he was very responsive and really kept up with the conversation with them. He was a little slower this afternoon because he had got his linen changed which is very painful because they roll him to one side then to the other. He is always worn out after that.
He liked having movies in the DVD player - I asked him if he wanted me to get 'The Sopranos' and he really liked that idea. Anything to keep his mind engaged when we are not there. We settled for CNN for him tonite - he is a news watcher and that will continually show him what day and time it is.
He told Brad this morning that he knew what had happened to him and that he had been there for 3 weeks.
Brad was quizzing him tonite and he asked him to tell us each of our names - he called Karen by name, he called me 'Angelica', he called Brad 'dipshit'. Loved it!!! He was cracking me up...

We know that his MRSA is not in his blood and not in his lungs - so that is really great news. Anyone who has researched it knows how great that news is.

Our new prayer request is the skin grafts they did yesterday takes and that he doesn't have to have anymore.

Thanks for all your continued messages and prayers, we see them answered every day!

Still no food He was able to have a little choc ice crean in his theropy session but she took it with her it was only a test to see how he handeled somethig different. It seems to go okay of course I've never known Jim to pass up ice cream at all let along choc.

This afternoon when we went back he seemed a little confused. he wanted to know why he had to change rooms and why we had to wear gowns did we have a disease ....nothing seems just right to him and he was sleeping alot.. Each day we go in he is different and we never know what to expect.

The nurse said he was having trouble breathing on the shorter trach and new plug, He was to try to breath through his nose and he wasn't understanding the idea. Everything is new to him,
they said he has to learn it all again swallow, eat, everything. He thought he was hungry yesterday but could only take a few bites.

Dad is still trying to get oriented and get things figured out. He said he felt like he was in a bad movie or TV show and couldn't change the channel. He's been frustrated with trying to understand why sometimes he can talk and sometimes he can't. We explained to him that it's because sometimes he has a plug in his trach and sometimes he doesn't. At night they put him on humidified oxygen so it's more comfortable breathing while he's sleeping. When that's on, he doesn't have a plug or cap in the trach so can't talk. Of course, he doesn't like the feeling that he's stuck in this "movie" and can't talk to anyone or get them to listen to him. He says it's like they are speaking a foreign language to him.

There is so much about hospital stays that we wish we could change but can't. The nurses have 4 patients each so when one has something urgent, she can't get to the others. I have experienced this same problem in other hospitals, but it is still frustrating. We know he's getting all of his meds and things that are vital to his care and that's important. We're just used to spoiling him.

We are always grateful for all the thoughts and prayers and notes from everyone. It means a lot to know there are so many who care so much.

He remembered that Christine was going home for a couple days and Amy was staying so that was good.

They took his pain medicine drip off and gave him a patch. Hopefully thats an improvement.

Sorry this is so late. Jim did not have a good day at all. When we arrived this morning he was sleeping and we thought he was just wore out from the morning dressing change they had just finished it. When I tried to wake him he opened his eyes and said to give him a minute. Then his breathing got rapid we called respiratory
at that time his heart rate was over 140 they did an ekg and blood test to see what was up. I thought his potassium was low because they put him on a drip. They ran a ct scan and an ultrasound we do not have the results yet but they were making sure everything was good with his heart and to see if there were any blood clots. will know more tomorrow.

We can use the prayers that everything is good with him

We didn't get to the hospital until noon, the nurses had jim so busy it was almost 2 o'clock until we could get in to see him. He was still having a little trouble breathing but was more alert than yesterday. I asked the respiratory therapist to cap his trach so he could talk to us, he said he wanted to talk, after it was capped he went to sleep I woke him up to see what he wanted to talk about he said nothing he just likes to be able to talk when he wants to. He ate a little lunch but he is still not eating enough. they still have to feed him through the nose tube at night .

The speech therapist tried graham crackers today to see if he could swallow crunchy foods, they may do a different type of swallow test tomorrow. Maybe if they can give him something better to eat he'll do better at eating.

Dr Benski has scheduled Jim on friday to have the top part of his fixator removed that should be better for him to sit. he will have to have therapy to move his knee it was injured pretty bad.

lets just pray that all of this happens in the right order.

Jim is still not eating very well.We are trying to get him to understand how important it is for him to eat.

For some reason he thought both arms and legs were damaged when he woke up from his nap, so we are trying to explain how he has to move his right arm and leg to keep everything mobil.

The Drs say hes doing good. We are a little worried about his confusion.

Today when we got to the hospital Jim was very good he remembered the weekend.asked if Brad got home okay.

They had him setting up in bed at physical theropy, with help of course, but he used all of his strength to help.

Ate a little lunch, then in the afternoon he asked about his bike and asked about work, so he stayed up to date all day..

this evening he has dressing changes and the dr came in all at once and he still stayed on top of things,

The dr said his stomach is healing good but he has alot of skin grafts down the road, said it was no hurry since the leg is the slowest to heal.

So his mind was pretty good he is still trying to sort things out and still asks alot of questions.

Dr Anderson was in today and took out his trach. It will take several days to heal but it was looking real good.

Dressing changes still wear him out and he needs extra pain medicine. Then he sleeps for awhile.

Still not eating alot but he hadn't had any food for several weeks.

Today was not as good as yesterday but he is still much better than he was so I'm not going to complain. They took his oxygen tube off of him today. He only has respiratory therapy every 6 hrs during the day none at night .

This morning at physical therapy they transferred him to a slant table which lifts him in a standing position to let the blood flow since he has been on his back for so long, it wore him out and that is what confusses the most

Other than that we had a pretty good day.

Thanks for thinking of us,

well it wasn't to bad of a day. Jim still seems a little confused but he has about six weeks that he lost. Most of the conversations were like himself. Asking about different things, He seemed to be in alot more pain today.

They are taking him into surgery about one tomorrow, I thought they were just taking the top ring of the fixatore off , but his leg had some swelling on it today and they are seeing something wrong on the alignment of his bone on the lower bone area.

Also they removed the brace from his arm this afternoon it didnt feel right to them when they moved the elbow around. They are xraying it tonight and may be doing something on it also.

Your prayers for surgery are appreciated..

Dr. Boliskensky?? removed the top bar of the fixator, (the piece that pinned knee in place)and the extreme bottom foot parts. Then they had to reset the left elbow and cast it for six weeks. Dad is already trying to oil it up and pull the cast off. His mind is great after being put out agian. That is why I did not post anything, I was so excited about friday that when I walked in and seen the changes overnight it made me sick. But I was reminded that we have to have the bad days to appreciate the rest. He is still only allowed immediate family due to his skin grafts and sterile enviroment . Monday they are going to try to get him up and in a wheelchair to move him around, he will be happy to look out a different window for once. They are also going to change the meds he is on to help with the confusion, that is what he hates the most is waking up and not knowing what was going on.

Jim had a fairly good day. He seems to be a little more confused in the mornings. Christine was able to talk to Dr McCarthy today, she is the dr that had done all of the surgery on his stomach, She had not made rounds in several weeks they have different drs rounding from the group each week, She thought Jim was doing very well healing.
His Leg looks alot different to me after surgery, today is the first I have seen it since surgery.
The drs are thinking about moving him to what is called an L tec faclity ( long term acute care) he is not bad enough to be in icu or the burn unit anymore but still has special needs. With his open wounds he needs special dressing changes and alot of physical theraphy there are two here but we dont have much information about either one. One is very close to the hosptial and I like that, the other one is about 30 minutes from the apartment. which is still close enough for us but I keep thinking winter is coming and the closer the better. I just have to do some more calling and we may try to visit both places this week,

Please pray we make the right decision for Jim ' s care.

Dad continued to work on getting all his facts straight today. He asked a lot of questions about his care.

He worked really well with his occupational therapist today and practiced sitting up. He was saying just what he thought today and told her how she seemed so much smarter than the physical therapist who usually comes in with her.

He didn't feel well when I first arrived in the morning and told me he had a really bad night. He was better later in the day, but after his morphine later in the day he started feeling the same way again. When I told the nurse his symptoms she said that he shouldn't have morphine anymore. So, we are praying that the new med will help him to feel better all the time.

I went over to visit one of the LTAC hospitals (Kindred) that we are thinking he might be going to later this week. It's just across the river from where he is now. It is located on the 5th and 6th floor of an old hospital building. The rooms are much smaller so I was concerned whether or not Karen could get around the room in the wheelchair. The other down-side is they don't have a treatment room to do his wound care so he wouldn't get a "shower" every day. The neat thing is that they have a policy that when a patient pushes a call button someone has to enter the room right away to see what they need--no talking on a speaker and waiting for a half hour.

Keep praying that he gets to a facility that is best for him.

I forgot some news from yesterday--Dad was feeling like his beard was way too long and it was bothering him so he asked me to trim it. I have never trimmed a beard before so you know he was desperate. I managed to get it shorter and almost uniform so he seemed happy.

When I arrived this morning the nurse said he hadn't slept last night so she was trying to get him to have a morning nap. He thought that would be nice, so I went down to look at the other LTAC hospital (LifeCare). It is farther from the apartment so it is our second choice, but we thought we should cover all the bases. It was a nice facility, but he would probably get a semi-private room. We wouldn't like that and didn't think he would either so we're sticking to our first choice. We still haven't heard if the paperwork has gone through to get him moved. The nurses ask me every day because the records say he's going to move every day. He seems kind of anxious to get it over with and get settled in the new hospital. Keep praying that will all work out for the best.

We are so thankful every day for all of your thoughts and prayers!!

Well, Jim made his move today he is now in a Ltec facility. He will get the same care on his wounds . The will push a little more on his rehab I think. He's now at kindred hospital just across the river from Miami Valley in Dayton

They transported him about noon today..He was almost inside kindred when he asked the lady if they could stop for a minute, she said why whats wrong, He thought it would be nice to have some fresh air for a couple minutes. Now Jim doesn't normally like fresh air guess he has been inside to long.

Jim seemed to like his new room okay, said it wasn't as big but he didn't need all that room. The remote worked good , he couldn't work the other one very well. And he thought the food was better, He might just be okay. His mind was better today but every now and then he slips back and we don't know what hes talking about.

Lets just pray that we both will be getting the care we need to get back home for Christmas

Because Jim was so content with his new place Brad and I waited until noon to go . What a shock when we got there. He was a mess couldnot talk to us. we couldn't get him to open his eyes, or anything it was like he was a child, as it turned out we think they were not giving him his pain medicine on schedule they were waiting for him to ask and he wasn't able to do that. It was 5 am since he had anything and hes to have it every four hours.

We just got home and he seemed a little better but he is not himself, the dr did come but never seeing him before he didnt know what he was looking for ,. Looking at him they couldnt tell he was a healthy , active person who worked every day.

We feel bad for not going early today but we felt he was doing good.

Please pray that he will be back to himself again tomorrow each day is so different we don't know how to handle it,

I got to the hospital around 5:00 a.m. and dad was setting up and trying to get out of bed to leave.Once I showed him his leg he remembered he wasnt going anywhere for a while. He is very confused about where he is and why. He got his meds and I fed him around 8, he also got cleaned up with new bed linen he liked that, then fell asleep for an hour. He woke back up and seemed relaxed, he said he just wanted to rest. Jimmy and Jim's mother came today, he knew Jimmy but I think he was confused about his mother once in a while.(dont we all try to act that way with our mothers once in awhile) He is very hard to understand today, he knows what we say, but he told us he cant unclutter it in his head to tell us. He thinks he is stuck in a video game that will not end.

Mom and I went back at 7:30 p.m. to tuck him in he was yelling and very angry about the nurses computer in the room, he said if somebody stops that white thing (screen saver) bounsing around the world would end. So I got the nurse to shut it off, thinking he could go to sleep. big mistake he went through the roof yelling we where in trouble now. Mom finally got him calmed down and to fall asleep by 9:30 p.m. He finally seemed calm sleeping.
He will have a cat scan Monday to see if or why the big change in temperment . He has never acted like this before.

He says he is not in anymore pain, they give him his pain meds every 4 hours. He didn't keep his breakfast down this morning so that is the first time that has happened

Everyone was very apologetic that came in today, but we are concerned because they didn't do anything on the weekend.

Dad had a bad day. We noticed something wasn't right when we arrived in his room around 10 am. We had trouble getting anyone else there to notice or to take our concerns seriously. He was holding his right arm funny and seemed to be "zoning" a lot. After about an hour his right arm was trembling uncontrollably and he looked really flushed. Again we were told he must just be worried about Karen's surgery and no one wanted to check on him. By noon (when it was time to take Karen over for her surgery check-in) it was really bad. He was scheduled for a visit to the Trauma Clinic so we knew he would be coming over to Miami Valley and I was planning on meeting him there with my question list for the doctors. I checked Karen in for surgery and went down to meet him. He looked awful when he arrived. He was shaking so much and sweating like someone turned on a faucet. Thankfully, it was obvious to the nurse that something wasn't right. I gave them a run-down on the past week and they paged the trauma doc. He looked at him and said he was going to admit him. He told Dad it was for a "tune-up". They took him over to the ER and started doing very thorough testing. Brad arrived around 4 pm and they were still doing tests. We left the hospital at midnight and still didn't have a clear answer. The docs fear is that he is septic or that he has some type of infection. He seemed settled in his new room and looked comfortable except the occasional sweating. He said he didn't have any pain with all of it and that it wasn't like he'd felt before. He was watching poker on TV when we left and seemed to be able to keep up with the game.

Keep praying for accurate diagnosis and that they can get him fixed and he can heal completely. We are also praying about where he will get the best care from here on, too.

Thanks!!

I forgot to say that they did find out that he was seriously dehydrated so they gave him a couple IV bags full of electrolytes. He was on potassium when we left.

He had to have an IV of potassium . His blood count was so low it would not read on the meter,so they had to give him a boost of sugar water I don't understand it all as you can tell.

He is not eating or drinking enough , doesn't sound like Jim at all, does it.
Tonight they came in for blood sample and they took a lung xray and culture.
Hopefully they won't find anything new just correct what is happening.

this is the bad day so now we can have two good days.

This is day 80 for everyone keeping track.

.
Dr. Johnson, the plastic surgeon, thought his skin graft looked good.

Dr. Ward, from trauma was in and informed us that his gallbladder is now acting up.. He explained that because he had a TPA(intravenous feeding) for more than seven days and being bed bound for so long.

In the morning at 6:30 am they are doing a cholecystostomy on his gallbladder, it is a drainage tube entered in the rib area ,until he can have his gallbladder removed maybe in three months or so.

Due to all the scare tissue from the abdomen problems and recent skin graft he can not have laparoscopic surgery , so he will have to have it removed the old surgical way, once everything heals.

Now I wonder if the last two episodes had something to do with the gallbladder

I know you will all be praying for us and We thank you

Jim's procedure went very well instead of doing it at 6:30 am as planned, they took him down about 10.00 am. He got back to his room about 12:30pm. He said it was a little painfully, they only gave him a local anesthetic .
He had a cup of soup and it seemed to go down okay with no pain.
His wrist was a little swollen so they took him for an ultrasound to make sure he didn't have a blood clot. They're pretty sure it was from the iv he has.
Hopefully he will get stronger now

Okay winter is here it was 27 this morning. During the night Jim was given two units of blood, his hemoglobin dropped to 6.9. The Dr seems to think it was the procedure with his gallbladder they go through the liver and its not unusual to loose blood. His hemoglobin was at 9.9 at the last reading which the Dr said was acceptable.

He seems to feel good , just tired of them poking him for blood. because they don't want to waste the blood so they are taking it out of his fingers and they are sore.

The Dr said today, they are still talking of moving him soon. I hope its not to soon, after everything that has happened.

I just won't worry about everything.

He has another roommate but hes not able to talk , it makes us realize how lucky we are this could have all been much worse.

They take alot of blood so the gal from the lab came in about 2am of all times, to put a pic line in, his arms are so marked up, she hit an artery it took her about 45 min to get it to stop bleeding , she then took him to the lab to make sure she had the pic in the right place. We are still looking for a three bedroom, ranch in Angola that we can get a wheel chair in. No date has been set yet for his release but we know he cant get in our house.

thank you for your thoughts and prayers

Today was our trip to Dayton. It was a very long day.
This was a very upsetting day for Jim. He has been having a great deal of pain in his knee, and we were trying to fight an infection with antibiotics. Today Dr Binski said it is in the bone and doesn't look like its getting better only worse.
We have scheduled surgery to fuse his knee which basically means they take out the damaged bone and fuse it together. This will cause permanent loss of movement of his knee, the leg will be straight with 15 degree bend.,
We are told this is not unusual for a severe injury of this nature .

Dr Binski said his riding days are probably over. Jim didn't want to here that he loves riding.

Up until this time we thought his injuries would all heal.
This is also going to cause a problem writing estimates that he would do returning to work. It would prevent his bending and stooping to look under the vehicle for damage.

Friday he goes to the plastic surgeon for his stomach I don't think he can handle any more bad news.

Today was the appointment with the plastic surgeon in Fort Wayne, That went pretty well he said it was healing as it should be and when it is completely healed he will do the reconstruction surgery. But he wants to wait until the leg is completed done.
So I think we'll be at this most of the summer.
JIm is still pretty bummed about the knee but doesn't have a choice at this time.
We will be staying in Dayton for a few days next week but don't have all the details.

Jim went into surgery at 2:30 pm today and got out at 7:45 pm, too long, but went well. Recovery room is still three hours until Jim gets back to his room when we can see him. Dr. Binski fused his left knee at 15 degrees and installed a full external fixator to keep leg in position until fusion heels. It usually takes about three months in full fixator. Dr. wants to do bone graft to lower left leg in about six weeks, and remove pins in ankle to make sure it will be okay. Many surgeries to come, but with everyone, it gets him closer to be able to start walking again.

We just got to our room.
Jim is in a lot of pain today. he has slept most of the day wakes up long enough to call the nurse for his pain medicine. He is really watching the clock, he is on a pain drip every 10 minutes, and pain pil every four hours.

Dr Binski came in to see how he was holding up and let him know the surgery went well.

Therapy was in to check on him and will be in tomorrow to get started with his rehab.

thank you for your thoughts and prayers.

Jim was awake more today. He is still on vicodin by mouth every 4 hours and the dilaudid drip every 10 minutes. We are not sure when we will be leaving here. Jim will be on iv antibiotic for about 6 weeks. They don't want anymore surprises before his bone graft.
He did very well with therapy today he was almost sitting on the side of the bed.
Christine and the boys were here for a visit. It was good to see them.

Keep us in your prayers

Jim rested most of the day stretching the drip to every 30 minutes and the vicodin still every four.
They took more x-rays of the leg today .
Hoping we will hear something about the plans to go home tomorrow.

Jim had two units of blood today they think he lost some during surgery and his hemoglobin was a little low when he came in.

He feels pretty good,a little edgy, different Doctors were in with different ideas. The floor Dr said he could go home but of course she is not the Dr on record.

The Trauma Dr and the Plastics Dr looked at his stomach
they want to come up with a game plan down the road for the reconstruction surgery

It doesn't look like we will be coming home until Thurs. Dr Binski wants everything under control before we leave. Then he will see Jim again in about two weeks I think there will be a lot of trips to
Dayton before he is completely healed

Jim played an April fools trick on the nurse practitioner that came in first thing this morning.
He didn't sleep very good during the night so he was tired today.
He stood up twice with therapy today but they don't think we can take him home in the van He has to have the e.m.t.s take him, he's just not strong enough to get in and out of the wheel chair with just Brads help and still is on a lot of pain medicine.
He will be going back to Northern Lakes in Angola, Thursday at the latest we think

My Internet wasn't working last night sorry I couldn't update.
Jim had a rough day on Wed he slept through his scheduled time for his meds so he was in a lot of pain.
He thought he was going home today but the insurance company couldn't authorize everything. They told us today that tomorrow afternoon he will be transported. So if we don't get out of here by 4:30 they will make us wait until Monday and the Dr wants to see him again by Wed. and every two weeks after.
He should now be able to put weight on his left leg so it may be easier for him to move. We'll see..

Thank you for your prayers

Jim is finally back at northern lakes in Angola. His ride was not as bad as the one he had in November from Dayton to Fort Wayne. He told the emt drivers the route and the young men were friendly and tried to make the ride comfortable for him.
After two days of thinking he was being discharged I think he is glad to be back in Angola.
His leg will be permanently straight with a very slight bend at the knee he will have to learn to walk that way. He has such a long way to go
this morning his pain has spiked again so if they can get that under control he will be happy

More later

Jim felt pretty good today, It is Blake's (our 4 year old grandson) birthday today so we had cake and presents today in Jim's room , we miss spending time with him.
Blake likes to look over Papa's wounds he thought they looked good has lots of questions. He may be the Dr in the family.
I think the pain is under control or he is accepting it better he didn't complain to the girls today.

Tomorrow he will be back on a therapy routine so I hope that goes well.

Thanks to everyone who stop by it helps pass the time .

Today was more like spring and everyone is feeling better even Jim.
He had a different therapist along with his regular one today, with a new idea. They helped him into the wheel chair and took him to the rehab room( he has been taking therapy in his room) got him out of the chair to stand and walk in between the bars. That seems like a huge improvement to me.
The more he can move around himself the sooner he can leave the facility, he will still need lots of help but we're hoping we can get some of that at home. Only time will tell.

Brad stopped by to see Jim today to see if he was going to be able to get in the van after his surgery. It looks like it will be okay Brad is fixing a box to rest his leg on while he is riding on the van seat.
We thought we had to go to Dayton tomorrow to see Dr Binski .but since he was seen before he left the hospital on Friday we will be able to wait another week. Jim talked to the office on the phone and felt okay about waiting til next week. It s a long ride for him.

The Drs are still trying to control his pain and it seems to be getting better.

It was a good day for all of us. Jim seems like his old self. Just would like to come home and get on with his life.
I think Brad is going to get his house ready for Jim to get in and out of so we can both stay with him until we can build us a house.
Brad is able to take Jim in the van to get around,
Wed is our first outing since surgery, we go back to Dayton for a Dr appointment.

Thank you for thinking of us

Our appointment on Wed went well. Dr Binski took off the bottom halo and put a cardboard type shoe on. That is to stay on 24/7 and he is to try to walk some. He is doing about two trips back and forth on the parallel bars.
He is still on the antibiotic but hopefully that is about finished Maybe three or four weeks he will be home.

Things are looking up . He is walking more each day with the help of the walker and the parallel bars, We go again to Dayton on Wed just a follow up.

We think he might tell us a little more about the bone graft but not sure Dr Binski does everything at his own pace.

We are trying to prepare for him to come home we think they will tell us any day now that we have to leave. His antibiotic with IV is finished on may 8th. So we dont want him leaving his nursing care before that.,

Yesterday April 30th we went to Dayton to see Dr Binski, for Jim's follow up. The Dr thought the leg looked very good, the bone looks like it may be healing and will not need a bone graft. That would be a very big plus. We go back in another two weeks.
Brad is working on the house to get everything in order for Jim to come home. We are so thankful for our family everyone is very helpful.
Jim was tired today but his therapy is going well and he is getting out of bed and taking a few steps. He will be alone some of the time after he gets to Brad's the stronger he is the better.

Next Wed is our next appointment with Dr Binski so we always look forward to any news he has for us.

Jim has been at Brads for two weeks now, and is getting around on his walker. He's not running any races yet but can get around by his self.
His left elbow is giving him some trouble but the Dr says its not anything that wasn't expected. We don't know exactly what that means but if the Dr doesn't get excited I guess we don't either. Hes taking muscle relaxers for it.
More later we've got the big wedding next week so were looking forward to that.
Then another visit to the Dr.
